Preface

Any engineering student studying signal processing will sooner or later encounter the complex exponential function. While this function is easily defined it takes some time to understand the concepts carefully. Better we understand this function the better we can appreciate its use in applications.

The main objective of our primer is to carefully introduce this function to engineering students who might otherwise bypass such explanations in their studies. Having said that our primer can benefit any learner exposed to signal or image processing. Our notes start from scratch discussing trigonometric concepts and calculus and end with applications such as the Fast Fourier Transform or data filtering.

Since our main audience will be the engineering folk we respect the engineering notation of j 2 = −1 as opposed to the mathematician’s i2 = −1.
