Dr. Jack Macki

Dr. Jack Macki earned a Ph.D. from Caltech and spent 2 years at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory before joining the mathematics department at the University of Alberta. Over a 40 year career he has received four awards for teaching excellence: two from the Faculty of Engineering, the Faculty of Science Teaching Award, and the University of Alberta Rutherford Teaching Award. Early in his career he was one of a group who redesigned the honors calculus courses at the U of A--these courses have been instrumental in attracting some of Alberta's brightest young minds into the field of mathematics. For the last 10 years of his career he focused on the first year Engineering Calculus courses, redesigning and upgrading them; among his innovations was the introduction of labs based on Maple computer software. For two years after compulsory retirement he was a lecturer at the University of Calgary, where his students nominated him for a teaching award. He is presently lecturing part time at the University of Alberta.
